What's the difference between gCNG® and natural gas?
Natural Gas – a simple hydrocarbon
Natural
gas is a mixture of gaseous hydrocarbons that developed organically from
vegetation over 50 million years ago. It formed under very high pressure,
buried several kilometers beneath the Earth's surface. It consists primarily
of methane, with trailing amounts of ethane, propane, butanes, and pentane.
Methane makes up between 85-95% of most natural gas mixtures. Natural
gas is often associated with oil as both are commonly found together in
the same reservoir. Non-associated natural gas is gas that is found without
oil.
Natural gas has become extremely popular as a major source of energy in the United States, for both consumers and industry, in part because it burns so cleanly. Many utilities, for example, have shifted away from coal or oil to natural gas to produce electricity. As a result, demand for natural gas is expected to rise by about 22 percent by 2030.
