FirmGreen Sponsors Wounded Warrior at Toshiba Classic Pro-Am
NEWPORT BEACH, California—March 18, 2013—The PGA Champions Tour returned to Newport Beach with the 2013 Toshiba Classic, Orange County's only PGA sanctioned annual golf event, being won by David Frost in a record tying performance on Sunday. For the Classic Pro-Am, held during the week leading up to the Toshiba Classic pro tournament, FirmGreen, Inc. (FirmGreen) sponsored participation for U.S. Marine Corps Sergeant Joel Simmons, a member of the Wounded Warrior Battalion.
The Toshiba Classic consistently fields one of the finest rosters of pros playing on the PGA Champions Tour, so the Classic Pro-Am is always a star-studded event. The two-day tournament, which took place Wednesday and Thursday before the pro tournament, pairs amateur foursomes with a different professional player each day. Preceded by the pairing party before and the awards party after, it's a golfer's 'dream week' come true.
For Sgt. Simmons—an avid golfer who hopes to pursue golf professionally after his active duty ends, it made for great memories as their foursome finished only one stroke off the lead. "I'm grateful to Steve and the Newport Beach Country Club for making me feel welcome and truly appreciated," said Sgt. Simmons. "Steve is an incredible guy, and I have so much respect for Vietnam veterans like him. In my opinion, they are the true heroes. Being out golfing in the Toshiba Pro-Am with a fellow marine was an amazing experience, and created memories that I will forever cherish!"
Steve Wilburn, FirmGreen's CEO, served in the Marine Corps during the Vietnam War. "In 1968, I was traveling home in Marine Dress Blue uniform after spending nine months in the Great Lakes Naval hospital recovering from wounds suffered in Vietnam, and was treated none too kindly in an airport during the trip," stated Steve. "I just wanted to ensure a different type of memory for another young man who suited up and showed up for his country."
Mr. Wilburn was recently appointed to serve on the Environmental and Renewables Committee of the Export-Import Bank of the United States (Ex-Im Bank) for 2013. He will be serving with Carol Browner, former head of the EPA; Governor Bill Richardson, former Secretary of the Department of Energy and Ambassador to the United Nations; and former Governor of the State of Washington, Christine Gregoire.
